Eye Exams & Routine Care

The importance of routine eye care can not be overstated.

During a comprehensive eye examination, we check both vision and eye health.  Many times we see patients without any complaints or symptoms that end up having a significant vision or health problems.  The sooner these problems can be addressed usually the better the outcomes.

We use the latest technology to check your vision.  Vision testing starts with an instrument called the  Marco OPD-Scan III Wavefront Aberrometer.  It is an Autorefractor, Keratometer, Pupillometer, Corneal Topographer, and integrated Wavefront Aberrometer.  I know those are a lot of big words but essentially it completes 20 diagnostic metrics in less than 10 seconds per eye.  The results of this testing can be used by the optometrist to refine your prescription with a Marco TRS-1500 digital refractor.  This “TRS” can be programmed to do a variety of vision tests on your eyes to determine a very precise prescription for glasses and contact lenses.

The health portion of the comprehensive examination is very important and can not only reveal a lot of eye conditions but can also reveal a lot of different medical conditions.  The eye possess small blood vessels which are greatly affected by vascular conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.  The optic nerve is an extension of the brain and can be affected by a variety of neurological condition such as multiple sclerosis and intracranial hypertension.  We utilize a variety of technologies to determine the health of the eyes.  To check the eye pressure (one of the tests for glaucoma) the iCare tonometer is typically preferred by patients and allows them to avoid the dreaded “air puff” test.  In addition to the traditional methods of checking inside the eye we provide Optomap technology.  With this instrument, we can produce a 200-degree image of the inside of your eyes.  These images can be used by the doctor to critically check for any issues going on and also as a baseline for any future changes with your retinas and optic nerves.

Contact Lens Examination

For patients wearing contact lenses, the annual contact lens examination is essential to make sure their eyes are remaining healthy and that the contact lens they are wearing is still the best option.  After a comprehensive examination is performed and health and vision is evaluated a contact lens can be recommended.  After the recommendation, the contact lens is evaluated with a microscope on the eye to make sure the lens fits appropriately.  The vision is then assessed and adjustments can be made.  If vision and fit is good with the diagnostic pair the supply of lenses can be ordered.  Conversely, sometimes these diagnostic lenses will be worn for a few days to make sure they are going to work through the patient’s daily tasks.
